Gabe Zelico NHL Network Interview Facing 100 Shots

After facing 100 shots against UCLA, I was invited to talk on the NHL Network about my unique hand, switching my glove/blocker set-up midway through my career, and how I’ve integrated sport psychology into playing goalie.

My love for hockey begins with the unique hand I was born with, a condition called symbrachydactyly. To imagine what it’s like, try using just your thumb and half of your index finger - that’s what I’m working with.

As I improved as a goalie and continued to more competitive leagues, I learned how important the mental game was in managing performance anxiety and feeling my best consistently.

I competed against able-bodied competitors and felt validation when I played well. When I didn’t have a great showing, however, this mindset worked against me as I questioned if I was in over my head, wondering, “do I belong here?”

As a young athlete, not knowing how to properly cope with pressure and fear of failure took a toll on my mental game. I wasn’t having as much fun, and it showed in my performances.

Once I started playing college hockey, the anxiety I felt before games skyrocketed. Fortunately, I started studying sport psychology at the same time. Had it not been for the sport psychology training, my performance would have plummeted.

Playing goalie is the most pressure-filled position in sports. Goalies these days are not taught the mental skills necessary to consistently play near their potential. Fortunately, I train my goalies in both mental and physical skills.

The goalies I train appreciate different approaches to building their mental game. Some want it to be an equal part of their training as the on-ice work. Others want it to be in the background in the beginning.

With me, you’ll develop your own, unique mental game toolkit. We’ll discuss when and how to use it to offset nerves and boost confidence that work best for you.
