What is Sport Psychology?
Everyone in sports faces mental obstacles and performance limiting mindsets.
Sport psychology studies how the mind affects an athlete's performance and how sports impact mental and emotional well-being.
In simple terms, sport psychology helps athletes develop mental toughness and resilience necessary for success in sports.
It involves science and research-backed training principles.
What goes on in sport psychology training sessions?
First, sport psychology coaching helps athletes develop, what I call, their mental game toolkit.
After adequate training, athletes have a toolkit full of mental skills and mindsets to facilitate enhanced focus, confidence, and ways to manage nerves.
It also involves training mindsets, such as:
Focusing on what’s within your control
Handling pressure and performance anxiety effectively
Pursuing challenges and the failures that are guaranteed along the way
Second, sport psychology coaches are a unique addition to your support system.
Let’s face it, athletes are under an incredible amount of stress and pressure. Whether it’s just their sport, or trying to balance work, school, relationships, and being at their best day in and day out, no athlete can fulfill their potential without support.
While some athletes find support in their friends, family, teammates, and coaches, many are reluctant to open up in fear of being a burden, looking weak, or due to a lack of trust. My 1 on 1 sessions are confidential - nothing will be spoken to anyone else about what we talk about without your permission.
This gives athletes the freedom to open up about stressors - on and off the field. My philosophy is simple here - a healthy, happy human performs better than those under immense stress. Sometimes it’s a safe space to vent, and other times, the athlete will learn how to manage their stressors going forward.
